The economic changes that occurred in the United States affected the social classes; it further separated the already uneven distribution of wealth. A majority of white citizens did not approve of African Americans attaining equal freedom for that would limit theirs - discrimination. The growing resistance resulted in the development of organizations, such as the Citizens Council, and the re-uprising of the Ku Klux Klan. They operated against anyone that publicly favors integration.
The African Americans, still considered of lower status because of their history as slaves, were not treated equally by the majority of Whites. This, though, did not seize their, and some Whites’, attempts to acquire equality in public services - and society in general - through protests, resistance, and retaliation. Their purpose, motivation, and determination were the driving forces of the Civil Rights Movement led prominently by Martin Luther King, Jr.
In Plessy vs. Ferguson, the Justices ruled that “separate but equal” systems were constitutional. However, segregated facilities and practices interfered with black opportunities by labeling them as inferior as concluded in the five cases under the single name of Brown vs. Board of Education. Activists were willing to bring to the limelight their conflicts, hindering to nothing and no one, and eventually ending segregation.
