As Martin Luther King, Jr.'s chief partner and fellow minister, Ralph Abernathy played an important part in civil right movement projects like the Montgomery Bus Boycott and Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Four years after the creation of the SCLC, he became vice president, promoting from secretary-treasurer. He succeeded MLK when he was assassinated, continuing with the nonviolent strategies and beliefs. Abernathy led the Poor People's Campaign March on Washington, D.C in May 1968. He had been arrested multiple times for his activism projects. During his command, internal conflict arose and fundraisers were not as successful, ending in his resignation. Abernathy then continued his work as full-time minister in Atlanta until his death.
