Otherwise known as the Black Muslims, NOI was formed by Fard Muhammad, but he was succeeded by Elijah Muhammad after his disappearance. It believed in African American superiority, especially over whites. One of its spokesmen, Malcolm X, was assassinated by the group when he denounced the organization. When Elijah passed away, his son, Warith, took over and turned the views towards a more traditional Islam. A member named Louis Farrakhan disapproved and created another group, upholding the original beliefs, bringing members, and seizing the name "Nation of Islam."
