In 1960, students who attended a convention at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina founded SNCC. Its mission was to abolish segregation in public facilities and encourage African Americans to register to vote, especially in the rural South. Its workers and volunteers often encountered violence, punishment, and, some, even death.
